Calahorra en la vida teatral hispana (Siglos XVII-XIX)
Summary / Abstract:
The study traces the development of theatrical life in Calahorra from the late 16th to the early 19th century.
Early evidence of theatrical performances dates back to 1580, though liturgical and festive performances existed before that.
Initial venues were outdoor spaces such as the Plaza del Raso and improvised corrales until the city built a proper patio de comedias in 1672.
Construction of the permanent patio involved collaboration between the city council and the Cathedral’s cabildo, with architects Santiago Raón and Domingo de Usabiaga.
The patio’s structure included three floors with camarillas and aposentos, a central stage with mechanisms for stagecraft, and a wooden roof with skylights.
Subsequent repairs and reconstructions occurred throughout the 18th century and into the early 19th century, reflecting both the importance and fragility of the theater infrastructure.
By 1821, the original patio ceased functioning as a theater, marking the end of its active period.
Key Details:
First documented theater activity: 1580, Corpus and patronal festivities.
First provisional corral: 1641, purchased from Martín Zapata.
Construction of the permanent patio de comedias: 1672–1673, project led by Santiago Raón & Domingo de Usabiaga.
Dimensions & structure: Three floors (approx. 9, 8, 7 feet high), ovoid interior with eight corner pillars, 41 usable spectator spaces (camarillas and aposentos), central stage with tramoya access.
Renovations: 1729 (roof), 1734–1736 (major repairs), 1801–1802 (reconstruction of stage and roof), 1807 (repairs), intermittent use until early 19th century.
Significance: Demonstrates an advanced architectural conception for a provincial theater, influenced by contemporary Spanish coliseos rather than nearby conservative models.
